Alandi

About

Alandi, located on the banks of river Indrayani about 25km north of Pune is the resting place (Samadhi) of the 13th century Marathi Bhakti saint, Sant Dnyaneshwar. He was instrumental in translating the Bhagavad Gita into Marathi.

Today, a temple has been built at the spot of his Samadhi and hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visit the temple. Especially on Ekadashi of the dark half of each month. The Indrayani River is a Perennial River and bathing in the river has special significance for pilgrims to Alandi.

Apart from the Dnyaneshwar Samadhi, devotees also visit the other temples in Alandi namely the Ram Mandir, Laxmi Narayan Mandir, Vitthala-Rakhumai Temple, Dnyaneshwari Mandir amongst others.

Another highlight of Alandi is Dnyaneshwar's Wall. As per the legend, when Sant Changdev came to visit Dnyaneshwar on a tiger, Dnyaneshwar with his siblings went to meet him riding on a wall that moved.
